1) Fire Burns Strangely
The flames don’t burn as bright as they used to be in your fireplace. The signs that your chimney needs repairing and cleaning are small cracks in the chimney walls due to excessive use or the blocked vents.
Irregulated fire burns are a sign that there’s a presence of a smoke shelf that needs inspection, repairing, and, if required, getting it fixed on time from an expert company like Apex Air Duct Cleaning & Chimney Services with National Fire Protection certified technicians is the best choice. Or else, it may be hazardous to people staying there.

3) Damper On Fireplace Is Black
Creosote deposit on a black damper implies creosote buildup. Creosote may manifest itself as a buildup of soft, flaky soot. Later, it compresses into a complex, glossy material that similarly adheres to surfaces like tar.
It is usually due to wood burning, chimney fire, or chimney flue. To repair such problems, we provide a level 2 inspection. We also closely look up the chimney cap and other roof-situated chimney parts for better and long-lasting repair services.
4) Require More Effort To Start And Maintain Fire
Oxygen is necessary for ignition. You might find it more challenging to start the fire ignition in the chimney, which might be due to a blocked chimney or limited airflow.
In such conditions, our certified repair technician conduct level 2 inspections. With level 2 inspection, we also closely look up the chimney cap, chimney crown, and all the other roof-situated chimney parts for better repair services.
5) Oil Stains Are Visible On Fireplace Walls
You may detect creosote buildup by looking for greasy patches on the walls of your fireplace. When chimneys are used for a long time, the vents get blocked due to chimney fire which needs to be removed by shop vacuum.
6) Your Fireplace Has The Odor Of A Campfire
You must have noticed that sometimes you get the smell of burnt woods even when the woods are not burning. It is one of the signs that your chimney needs urgent repair services.

The town of Clifton turned 100 years-old in 2017 but documented settlements in the area date back to 1679 when indigenous leader, Captahem, gifted a deed for 11,000 acres along the shores of the Passaic river to Hans Frederick. The modern name of ‘Clifton’ was derived from the cliffs of Garrett Mountain which borders the Montclair Heights neighborhood in the western part of the city. Clifton was an agricultural hub and home to the U.S. Animal Quarantine Station was operated in Clifton by the United States Department of Agriculture starting in 1903. It was served by the Newark Branch of the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad. It was the primary location on the East Coast where animals from poultry, horses and cattle to zoo animals were held in quarantine after being brought into the United States to ensure that the animals were not infected with diseases that could be spread in the U.S. The station operated in Clifton until the late 1970s, when the facility was relocated to Stewart International Airport.
Although Clifton and surrounding towns have long converted from farmlands to suburban communities, given their close proximity to Manhattan (Clifton is less than 15 miles directly west from Midtown), the town still boasts two small working farms that sell fresh organic vegetables in-season:
- Ploch’s Farm: A family-run 15-acre farm since 1867.
- City Green Farm Eco Center: An organic farm and 501(c)3 non-profit focused on promoting urban farming and education since 2004.
