Signs It’s Time to Contact a Bayonne, NJ Chimney Sweeping Professional

Do you rely on your fireplace to heat your house? Do you use it solely for the ambiance that it creates? Whatever the case may be, there’s no doubt that the fireplace is one of the most beloved features of your Hudson County home; however, in order to ensure that it remains that way, it must be properly maintained. Routine chimney sweeping services are a vital part of that maintenance.

Of all the components of your fireplace, the chimney is one of the most important. It exhausts the smoke and excess heat that fires produce. It ensures a steady flow of oxygen, which fires need in order to burn. In other words, without the chimney, your fireplace wouldn’t function. Over time, however, a chimney gets dirty, and when that happens, the safety of the structure, your home, and your family will be compromised. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), failure to clean heating equipment – including chimneys – is one of the leading causes of house fires. Clogged chimneys also increase the risk of exposure to hazardous fumes, such as carbon monoxide. Furthermore, when a chimney is dirty, the fires you burn won’t receive the oxygen they need to thrive.

In other words, keeping a chimney clean is extremely important. But how do you know when you need to schedule an appointment with a Bayonne, NJ chimney sweeping professional? The following are some of the telltale signs that indicate it’s time to get in touch with a chimney sweep near you.

Damper Issues

The damper is a vital component of a fireplace. It allows the byproducts of combustion, including excess heat, gases, and smoke, to exhaust out of your house when the fireplace is in use and feeds the fire with oxygen. It also prevents indoor air from escaping your house when the fireplace isn’t being used. Because it’s so important, a flue needs to work properly.

When it’s functioning properly, a flue will open and close with ease; however, if it’s sticking and you’re having a hard time moving it, then that is a surefire sign you’re going to want to get in touch with a chimney sweep near you. There are several factors that could be causing the problem. The buildup of dirt and debris, or corrosion and rust caused by moisture exposure, maybe prevent the flue from opening and closing. A certified, experienced Bayonne, NJ chimney sweeping professional will perform a complete assessment of your entire chimney to determine the cause of the problem. Of course, they’ll thoroughly clean all components of the structure, including the flue.

Whether the flue issues are the result of dirt and debris buildup, corrosion and rust, or any other cause, a reputable chimney sweep near you will restore its function, and will ensure that it is working properly.

Fire Problems

Fires need oxygen to burn. A chimney not only exhausts the smoke, soot, and excess heat, but it also feeds the fires you burn with vital oxygen. When the chimney is clean (and the damper is opened), the fires you light in your fireplace should be strong and warm; if however, it’s dirty or obstructed, the fires you light won’t receive the oxygen they need to thrive.

Chimney Sweep Near Me in Bayonne, NJ

If your fires aren’t burning as powerfully and they aren’t producing as much warmth as they usually do, if they start and peter out quickly, or if you just can’t seem to get them started at all, a dirty chimney could be to blame. Check the flue to see if it’s opened. If it is and you’re still having issues with your fires, it’s time to schedule an appointment with a chimney sweep near you. A reputable Bayonne, NJ chimney sweeping professional will use the most advanced tools and equipment to remove caked-on debris and any obstructions that may be blocking the chimney. When the job is finished, you’ll be able to enjoy strong, warm, and glowing fires.

Strange Sounds

Have you been noticing odd noises coming out of your chimney? Banging, scratching, growling, chirping, or anything else that sounds out of the ordinary? If so, chances are critters have moved into your chimney.

Animals, such as raccoons, bats, mice, squirrels, and birds, often take up residence in chimneys, as the structures provide shelter from the cold and protection from predators. As they enter, exit, and move around inside the chimney, the critters will bang into and scratch on the walls, and you’ll be able to hear the noises they make coming out of the walls and the fireplace. Obviously, you don’t want animals nesting in your chimney. Not only is there a chance that they could make their way inside your Hudson County home, but they’ll obstruct the chimney and when you light a fire, their nesting materials (and the animals themselves) could ignite.

If you’re hearing unusual noises coming from your chimney, don’t ignore them! Get in touch with a chimney sweep near you to schedule an appointment for a cleaning. A reputable and experienced Bayonne, NJ chimney sweeping technician will determine if, in fact, critters have taken up refuge in the structure, and if so, they’ll humanely remove the animals, as well as their nesting materials and any other debris they may have left behind.

Some information about Bayonne, NJ

Bayonne is a city in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. Located in the Gateway Region, Bayonne is situated on a peninsula located between Newark Bay to the west, the Kill Van Kull to the south, and New York Bay to the east. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city’s population was 63,024, reflecting an increase of 1,182 (+1.9%) from the 61,842 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 398 (+0.6%) from the 61,444 counted in the 1990 Census. The Census Bureau’s Population Estimates Program calculated that the city’s population was 64,897 in 2019, ranking the city the 580th-most-populous in the country.

Originally inhabited by Native Americans, the region presently known as Bayonne was claimed by the Netherlands after Henry Hudson explored the Hudson River which is named after him. According to Royden Page Whitcomb’s 1904 book, First History of Bayonne, New Jersey, the name Bayonne is speculated to have originated with Bayonne, France, from which Huguenots settled for a year before the founding of New Amsterdam. However, there is no empirical evidence for this notion, which is considered apocryphal. Whitcomb gives more credence to the idea that Erastus Randall, E.C. Bramhall and B.F. Woolsey, who bought the land owned by Jasper and William Cadmus for real estate speculation, named it Bayonne for purposes of real estate speculation, because it was located on the shores of two bays, Newark and New York.

Bayonne became one of the largest centers in the nation for refining crude oil and Standard Oil of New Jersey’s facility – which had grown from its original establishment in 1877 – and its 6,000 employees made it the city’s largest place of employment. Significant civil unrest arose during the Bayonne refinery strikes of 1915–1916, in which mostly Polish American workers staged labor actions against Standard Oil of New Jersey and Tidewater Petroleum, seeking improved pay and working conditions. Four striking workers were killed when strikebreakers protected by police fired into a crowd.

The Cape Liberty Cruise Port is a cruise ship terminal that is on a 430-acre (170 ha) site that had been originally developed for industrial uses in the 1930s and then taken over by the U.S. government during World War II as the Military Ocean Terminal at Bayonne. Voyager of the Seas, departing from the cruise terminal in 2004, became the first passenger ship to depart from a port in New Jersey in almost 40 years.
